Water softeners and filtration

Plumbing Doctor installs and services water softeners and water filtration systems for homes in Central New Jersey. A softener protects pipes, water heaters and fixtures from hard-water scale. A filter improves taste and removes specific contaminants. We'll help you pick what your water actually needs.

Hard water and your plumbing

Hard water carries calcium and magnesium. When it's heated, those minerals drop out as scale inside water heaters, on faucet aerators and shower heads, and inside pipes. Scale makes water heaters work harder and wear out sooner. Mike explains how hard water hurts plumbing.

Softeners

A water softener swaps hardness minerals out of the water before it reaches your fixtures. It sits on the main line, usually in the basement, and needs salt topped up periodically.

Filtration

Filters range from an under-sink unit for drinking water to a whole-house system on the main line. The right choice depends on what you want removed. For well water, start with a lab test.

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Water Treatment Systems: common questions

Do I need a water softener?

If you see scale on fixtures, spotty dishes or a water heater full of sediment, your water is likely hard. A softener removes the minerals that cause scale and protects your plumbing and appliances.

What's the difference between a softener and a filter?

A softener removes hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium). A filter removes things like chlorine taste, sediment or specific contaminants. Many homes use both.

Do you install filters for well water?

Yes. For well water we recommend a lab test first so the system matches what's actually in the water.
