Test it before you need it

Sump pumps sit unused for months and then have to work all at once in a storm. That's when a stuck float or a dead motor shows up. Once a year, before spring rains, pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch the pump start and empty it. If it doesn't, call before the next storm instead of during it.

Battery backup pumps

Storms that flood basements often knock out power too. A battery backup pump sits next to the main pump and takes over automatically when the power goes out or the main pump fails. For a finished basement, it's cheap insurance.

Pump replacement

When a pump is worn out we replace it with one sized for your pit and how much water it handles. We check the check valve and the discharge line at the same time, because a new pump on a bad discharge line still leaves you with water in the basement.

How we handle it

Every sump pumps job follows the same four steps, and you know the price before step three.

Step 01Sump Pumps

Test the pump

We fill the pit and check the float switch, the pump motor, the check valve and the discharge line.

Step 02Sump Pumps

Repair or replace

A stuck float or a bad check valve can often be fixed. A worn-out motor means a new pump.

Step 03Sump Pumps

Add a backup

A battery backup pump keeps the pit draining when the power is out, which is when storms hit hardest.

Step 04Sump Pumps

Check the discharge

Water has to leave the pump and drain away from the house, not back toward the foundation.

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Sump Pumps: common questions

How long does a sump pump last?

Most sump pumps last about 7 to 10 years, less if they run often. Test yours by pouring a bucket of water into the pit: the pump should start on its own and empty it.

Do I need a battery backup sump pump?

If your basement floods when the pump stops, yes. Heavy storms often knock out power at the same time the pump is needed most. A battery backup takes over automatically.

My sump pump stopped and water is coming in. What do I do?

Check that the pump is plugged in and the breaker hasn't tripped. Lift the float to see if the pump starts. If it doesn't, call us. Stay away from standing water near outlets.

Why does my sump pump run all the time?

Either the water table is high (common in spring and after storms), the float switch is stuck, or the check valve has failed and water flows back into the pit. We can tell which on a visit.
