Hard water and water heaters

Bridgewater gets New Jersey American Water from its Raritan system, which reports naturally occurring hardness. Hard water leaves sediment in tank heaters and scale on fixtures, so annual flushing pays off here.

02

Single-family homes from every decade

About 70% of Bridgewater homes are single-family houses, and half were built before 1980. Older sections like Bridgewater Center tend to have original drain lines and valves.

03

Middle Brook and the Raritan

Ida flooded Route 22 at Middle Brook in 2021 and damaged a sewer main there. Basements near the brooks and the North Branch of the Raritan need a working sump pump.

Plumbing problems we see in Bridgewater

Every town's houses age differently. These are the problems that come up most in Bridgewater homes, and what Mike does about them.

Plumbing for Bridgewater homes

Bridgewater is mostly single-family houses, about 70% of all homes, spread from the older streets around Bridgewater Center and Finderne to the hills of Martinsville. Plumbing Doctor works across the township from our base in neighboring Somerset.

Water heaters and hard water

Bridgewater's water comes from New Jersey American Water, whose largest treatment plant, Raritan-Millstone, sits right in the township. NJ American Water lists the hardness in its Raritan systems as naturally occurring. In practice that means sediment at the bottom of tank water heaters and white scale on faucets and shower heads. Flushing a tank heater once a year keeps it quieter and helps it last. If scale is a constant fight, ask about a water softener.

Older sections, older pipes

Half of Bridgewater's homes were built before 1980, and in Bridgewater Center the median house dates to 1968. Homes that age often still have original cast-iron drains and galvanized or early copper supply lines. When drains back up more than once, we run a camera through the line before recommending anything.

Flood-prone spots

Ida sent Middle Brook over Route 22 near Thompson Avenue in September 2021 and damaged a sanitary sewer main there. The North Branch of the Raritan crested just above its Floyd record on the Branchburg line. Homes near the brooks should test the sump pump each spring.

Plumbing emergency in Bridgewater right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.
