Buying a home

A general home inspection looks at plumbing in passing. It usually doesn't put a camera in the sewer line, and that line is where some of the biggest repair bills hide. Mike explains why buyers need a plumbing inspection, and his checklist for new homeowners covers the first things to check after moving in.

What we check

  • Every sink, toilet, tub and shower: leaks, flow, drainage and worn parts
  • Water heater age, temperature, relief valve and venting
  • Exposed supply and drain lines, shut-off valves and outdoor faucets
  • Water pressure
  • The main sewer line by camera, when needed

After the inspection

You get a plain list of what's fine, what needs attention soon and what can wait, so you can plan or negotiate with the facts.

Had backup and they came out in half hour on a Sunday and got the blockage resolved. They cleaned up after themselves. Very very professional people.

They tell me what is worth doing or not doing, and won't try to upcharge me. The work is always great. They are my go-to!

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Plumbing Inspections: common questions

Should I get a plumbing inspection before buying a house?

Yes, especially for older homes. A general home inspection doesn't run a camera through the sewer line, and a broken sewer line is one of the most expensive surprises a new owner can find.

What does a plumbing inspection include?

Every fixture, the water heater, visible supply and drain lines, shut-off valves, outdoor faucets and water pressure, plus a sewer camera inspection when it's called for.

How often should plumbing be inspected?

Once a year is a good rule, along with flushing the water heater.
