Repair or replace?

Most disposal problems are jams, a tripped reset button or a loose drain connection, and those are repairs. A disposal that leaks from the bottom of the unit itself has a cracked housing and has to be replaced. The same goes for a motor that has burned out.

Keep it working

Run cold water before, during and after using the disposal, and feed scraps in a little at a time. Keep grease and fibrous food out of it. Mike covers the right way to clean a garbage disposal.

They tell me what is worth doing or not doing, and won't try to upcharge me. The work is always great. They are my go-to!

Water on the floor right now?

Call. A licensed plumber answers day or night, talks you through stopping the water, and gets on the road.

908-873-6686

Nights, weekends and holidays: emergency visits are an extra $250, paid upfront. We tell you on the phone before we drive out.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Kill power to anything wet, from the breaker panel, if you can reach it dry.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Garbage Disposals: common questions

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not work?

Something is jammed. With the power off, the disposal can sometimes be freed from below with an Allen wrench. Never put your hand inside. If it still won't turn, call us.

What shouldn't go down a garbage disposal?

Grease, oil, bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta and rice, and fibrous scraps like celery and onion skins.

How long does a garbage disposal last?

Usually around 8 to 15 years, depending on the model and how it's used.
