Plumbing for Edison's neighborhoods
Edison grew from about 16,000 people in 1950 to nearly 45,000 in 1960, and kept building after that. Today about 56% of its homes date from before 1980. In Clara Barton, Menlo Park and the older parts of Stelton we see what that age brings: cast-iron drains that clog and crack, worn shut-off valves, and supply pipes that have been patched before.
Three water systems
Edison is unusual: its water can come from the township's own Edison Water Utility, from Middlesex Water, or from New Jersey American Water's separate Edison system, depending on the street. It doesn't change how we work inside your house, but it does decide who replaces the service line out at the street.
Middlesex Water is replacing lead and galvanized service lines in Edison with an $18 million state loan closed in June 2026. When your service line is replaced, it's a good time to look at the pipe inside the house too.
After heavy rain
Ida overwhelmed Edison's sewer system in 2021 and caused two sinkholes in sewer lines, which FEMA later helped pay to repair. If your basement drain gurgles or backs up when it pours, the lateral from your house may be cracked or full of roots. A sewer camera inspection shows which.
